A question about e-files rating regarding the Sherman Firefy. Why does this tank has so good atack(21) when a Tiger has only 17?(in most e-files. The Firefly was an modified M4,M4A2, M4A3 or M4A4 with a 17 pounder (76.2 mm) gun. The Tiger has an 88 mm gun who could destroy any allied tank at 2 km. So, why 21 atack for the 76.2 mm gun an 17 for the 88? :)
I guess this has not changed significantly since the ancient SSI e-file. After all, the Tiger has 18 HA in the RSF (and the Firefly 21, indeed).
AFAIK the calibre is not as much relevant as the type of shell and its velocity. This is what I found at www.panzerlexikon.de:
8.8cm /36: 795 m/s (with AP ammo) 17pounder: 1204 m/s
So the HA values may be reasonable. Anyway, the overall combat value of a Firefly is inferior to that of a Tiger (due to initiative and ground defense). I'm sure you have experienced the difference in many PG2 games.
Weight of projectile: 7.3 kg Muzzle velocity: 930 m/s Penetration figures given for an armoured plate 30 degrees from the horizontal
Hit probability versus 2.5 x 2 m target [2] Range Penetration in training in combat 100 m 171 mm 100 % 100 % 500 m 156 mm 100 % 100 % 1000 m 138 mm 100 % 93 % 1500 m 123 mm 97 % 74 % 2000 m 110 mm 89 % 47 % 2500 m n/a 78 % 34 % 3000 m n/a 66 % 25 %
I say. Tiger gun- better range, better penetration and accuracy for over 1500m targets. Every type of german AP ammo had better range and penteration. The british had good scores with the APDS ammo wich was counted for only 6% of use during war. It was less accurate and did less dmg if it did penetratate/german usually blow up tanks when hit, rather for the little holes that the british were doing to them :P. I say. British 17-pounder- altough a very good anti-tank gun for the allies I say it's maximum a match for the 8.8 cm KwK 36.
The projectiles but used it was the 88mm, PzGr.39 (10.2 Kg–773 m/s) and the 17 Pdr, APC (7.71 Kg–884 m/s). Both had approximately same kinetic energy at 1000, 1500, 2000 m. The HA it should be 18 for the two guns. The PzGr.40 were little used. The gun of the tiger I had an accuracy of 92% to 1000 m.
