First half of the duel is played by Hannibal as Germans, and Alsenor as Russians.
Alsenor / pre battle report / Russian side (attacking)
Intelligence:
Front line of high number of fortification, supported by infantry units and
artillery backup.
All extremely deeply entrenched, most as high as 12 to 14.
No presence of mobile armor or air force.
Substantial German reinforcements expected after turn 3.
Objectives:
Overall objective is the town of Lipsty, in the NW corner of scenario.
Initial objectives are:
Select fortifications within range of more than one artillery unit and attempt
to prepare them for extraction by infantry, where possible with armored support.
Minimize exposure to counter artillery fire.
Attempt isolation of valuable arty unit at airstrip south of Berestovaia River
to prevent withdrawal through Peremoga.
Attempt crossing of Babka River to silence artillery south of Bol Babka before
liberating town.
Hannibal / pre battle report / German side (defending)
(unedited report from German High Command)
The German head quarters have made the following assessment of the situation
on the endangered Lipsty front:
Goals/strategy:
Delay Russian attack as much as possible until heavy reinforcements arrive
Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats:
Strengths: heavy entrenchment with artillery cover
Weaknesses: virtually no air defense, no air support
Opportunities: none until reinforcements arrive
Threats: outnumbered, Russian air force
Deciding where to defend
Defend current position; when I move one of my main strengths (entrechment)
will disappear.
Assess Current Situation / Position - German side
Basically it's just holding on to current positions.. And rush reinforcements
to the front as soon as they arrive..
Assess Current Situation / Position - The opponentArtillery Support
About 8 entrenched artillery units (strength 7 or 8).
Air defense
One unit (against 6 or more Russian air units).
Air Support
Not available (against 6 or more Russian air units)
Infantry
About 20 heavily entrenched units (strenght 7 or 8)
Tanks
Only 2 units (far behind the front)
Entrenching
Current levels between 8! And 15!!! Even Russina air force has difficulty hurting German units.
The Russian objective is clear: break through German lines as quickly as possible.
Artillery (Russian)
Massive number of units. Two types: the limbered/unlimbered type (1) and the move and counterfire type (2).
Will be used to soften up entrenched German units.Air Force (Russian)
6 or more Russian air units. Extremely dangerous for troops on the move.Air Support (Russian)
Unknown at this moment.Infantry (Russian)
A lot stronger than the German infantry. More and bigger units (strength 15 mostly).Tanks (Russian)
Some 6 units at the start of the game. Present & deadly!Multiple attacks
Multiple attacks on specific positions is absolutely crucial for the Russian troops to be able to break through..
These attacks must be broken up by German artillery counter fire as much as possible.

Alsenor / report for turn 04 / Russian side (attacking)
Intelligence:
The situation before turn 4 can be seen in the previous screenshots.
Significant reinforcements on the German side are expected in turn 4:
The nearby 3rd and the 23rd Panzerdivisions with Col. Gen. von Paulus will reach
the area south of Tsihkony by crossing the Babka River from the South, and with
newly reinforced substantial artillery support will present a serious threat
to Bol Babka and the South Eastern section.
Additionally, the arrival of the Luftwaffe has to be reckoned with, with fighters
outgunning most of what the Russians have in the air.
Objectives:
It is imperative to liberate and fortify Peremoga and Bol Babka
before the arrival of the enemy's reinforcements.
Requesting air defense units to provide cover for support artillery behind city
against expected air raids.
In Northern and Central section rapid advance is advised to retain the initiative.

Hannibal / Report for turn 04/ German side (defending)
(unedited report from German High Command)
(maps deleted)
General Hannibal has stated the following:
"My beloved German army, it is now, that the time has come to show what
you're worth.
Fight like hell.We all have been in very difficult situations before
and we have stood our ground then and we will stand it now..I'm confident
that you will not disappoint me.
Let the death of your comrades, who fought to the last man to ensure
the 3rd and 23rd Panzer divisions could arrive on time at the front, not be
in vain!"
After this statement our reporter heard General Hannibal say to his aide
that he hoped Goering would finally come through and give the much needed
air support.
Let us pray for our guys at the front.
Alsenor / report for turn 05 / Russian side (attacking)
Intelligence:
The expected reinforcements on the German side have now arrived,
and need to be reckoned with.
The 3rd Panzers can be expected somewhere in the central area, and the 23rd
in the south.
Velsco, in the north, almost certainly is supported by good guns, positioned
West of the city.
Objectives:
In the south, Peremoga must be softened sufficiently to fall before
the reinforcements reach it, and the same goes for Bol Babka.
In the center caution is advisable until we can see more clearly what the 3rd
Panzers are up to.
In the meantime we are going to leave an inviting pocket open and bring our
armored units north to assist in preparing the assault on Velsco.
Debriefing after turn 5:

(maps deleted) Three armored units to shield our artillery, and three cavalry units are set for the future task of sweeping around the wooded area northwest of the city. |

Our recons spotted the head column of the 23rd Panzer Division
approaching Bol Babka from the West, with the Luftwaffe flying cover for them.
Overall, it is now of paramount importance to think of the ever present threat
of aerial attack on our armor, and moving artillery.
Consequently we had to pull our tanks back east of Bol Babka to shelter them
under AAA umbrellas.
Due to Hannibal going AWOL this feature battle is going to be archived unfinished.
The following reports were previously
classified information.
They are published now to offer a final perspective on the events leading up
to Hannibal's disappearance.
Alsenor / report for turn 06 / Russian side (attacking)
Intelligence:
3rd Panzers didn't seem to take the bait in the center, and 23rd are not
showing yet.
Our recon spotted a single infantry unit in the woods south of the Bol Babka
River, presumable to guard the southern approach to Tsihkony.
Objectives:
Advance on Velsco, but split forces in two.
Further shelling of Peremoga and liberation of Bol Babka.
Bring the T34 we have in the area south of the river around the forest to attack
infantry in the open.

Alsenor / Report for turn 07 / Russian side (attacking)
Intelligence:
The mounted artillery we left as bait in view of the German fighters
at our air strip was ignored, and - despite good air defenses as retaliatory
deterrent - the Luftwaffe launched a daring attack in full force on our task
force approaching Velsco.
The attack was devastatingly costly to the Russian side, with two fighters down,
and a TB leader pinned for easy mark in the next turn.
It also aided a ground attack which cost the Russian side a tank and two artillery
pieces.
Not much resistance is noticed in the center, and there is no evidence of a
23rd Panzer advance at Bol Babka.
The single infantry unit we spotted in the previous turn guarding the approach
south of Bol Babka River was surprisingly withdrawn, but our T34 is still in
position to attack it should it return.
Objectives:
Top priority is regrouping the northern task force and limiting
further damage as much as possible by bringing in all available anti-aircraft
units.
Peremoga still has a single infantry unit sitting in it, supported by at least
two cannons. Needs further shelling and preparation for taking in turn 8.
Our hold on Bol Babka must be solidified, and AD umbrellas put over all artillery.

Alsenor / Report for turn 08 / Russian side (attacking)
Intelligence:
Our pinned bomber survived, thanks to more rushed in AD guns which
deterred another attack.
Another air raid by the Luftwaffe, shifting to our second task force in the
center, was limited to less damage, and no loss of aircraft.
A second attack at Bol Babka was limited to a single infantry unit, with minimal
damage.
Objectives:
Further meticulous regrouping is needed to bring all forces under
protection from the Luftwaffe.
Our artillery is in position at Peremoga, and the town is ready to be captured.
At Bol Babka AD umbrella must be tightened.

Alsenor / Report for turn 09 / Russian side (attacking)
Intelligence:
The bait we laid with an invitingly unoccupied Peremoga was indeed
taken, but it had a very costly side effect to the Russian air force, and again
the Luftwaffe managed to find a vulnerable spot way behind the Russian lines.
Three of the best Russian fighter planes were parked out of all reasonable spotting
ranges, but were found by step by step discovery.
The map shows the initial move by a recon unit, using the total movement range
deep into Russian territory, followed by an infantry unit even further to reach
the airstrip. The subsequent approach of the German planes showed up the
Russian fighters on the far right, and they were easily eliminated.
(maps deleted)
Objectives:
The intruding recon and infantry unit have to be isolated, and
the recon destroyed if possible.
After the loss of 5 fighters due to unexpected detection, it is obvious that
the Russian air force can not take any active role in the battle.
We do have the option of eliminating one of the German Stukas, which sits
unescorted over our airstrip.
However, it would mean sacrificing another two fighters to the nearby German
bandits, and may therefore not be a good trade-off at this point.
With the Luftwaffe operating unopposed with 5 fighters and 4 Stukas we will
have to take it step by step from here on, carefully keeping as much AD protection over our
troops as we can while moving.
It will therefore be impossible to proceed at the necessary pace to reach all
victory hexes within the allotted time frame, and we can only advance after
softening up defenses sufficiently with artillery.
Debriefing after turn 8:
|
(maps deleted) The recon intruder was destroyed, and troops were brought
in to prevent further intrusion by the infantry at the air strip, setting
it up for the kill next turn, and return the strip into Russian hands. |
(maps deleted) Bol Babka has to be held as a defensive post to prevent
any rush at the only Russian victory hex behind it. |
