Feature Battle Avenger vs. Alsenor
Caen - Charnwood

As usual for the demo games, we will play one side first, and then switch sides.
We usually will give you a report on the battle with a delay of three turns, to protect sensitive information.
First half of the duel is played by Avenger as Allies, and Alsenor as Germans.

Avenger's opening turn - pretty good initial assault!

The garrison at Caen being intact after the opening turn,
I withdrew it and launched a hard counter attack,
crossing the Orne River with all the armor at hand.

Avenger / turn 2 / Allies (attacking)

The General hit back hard on all fronts, and counter attacked at Caen crossing the bridge with 5 Panzers, including a resilient Tiger leader.
The Germans are still in control of Bocage, and entrenched in Verson and Caen.

I withdrew from Caumont in the far west, and closed in tight on Villers Bocage, hoping to push the Germans out of it next turn and take it for badly needed prestige.
See map

Took Verson, which was needed for points.
At Caen I was more or less forced to close in tight to prevent a total breakout of the Panzers into Allied territory.
Had to use some prestige points to buy an M8 so I could see what's lurking on the other side of the river.
Good thing I did, because the General had brought up his AD into range and would hit my bombers on the next turn if I used them over Caen.
I tried to take advantage of the move and bombed the 5-point Flak first, then the mounted 10-point Flak.
Unfortunately did not do much damage, and will have to take their fire in return.

Alsenor / turn 2 / Germans (defending)

In the West the Germans are pushing past Caumont, but at Bocage there is strong Allied pressure with close artillery backing.
I managed to kill one infantry unit, but could not reach the mounted cannon behind it.
See map

At Caen the Panzers moved out of the city and destroyed two Shermans.
German Flak severely damaged one of the Tempests that had bombed it.
The threat of several artillery batteries moving in close to the city made it prudent to withdraw all soft targets from their range of fire.

Avenger / turn 3 / Allies (attacking)

I still couldn't take Villers Bocage, but at least we are holding the line, and have three arties in firing range.
See map

Had to run with the airforce and use it in the West where it was safe from AD.
Again I had to move in tight around Caen to keep the Panzers from overrunning everything, and brought all the arties close in as well.
Bought a 5-range arty piece, and moved it towards Caen to reach the German gun positions.
Just realized that I have lost ALL my armor already!

Alsenor / turn 3 / Germans (defending)

The defense of Bocage is now becoming too costly and I withdrew the whole group, shifting it west to support the offensive push to the north.
See map

Aided by artillery, the two Panzers east of Caen did good damage, freeing them for a retreat to safe zones.
The Panther west of Caen was not so lucky, and is left to his own fate.
Reconnaissance revealed a new 8-incher in dangerous range, forcing a pull-back of the stronger AD unit.

Avenger / turn 4 / Allies (attacking)

I was finally able to take Villers Bocage, but now I have to worry about the troops that left from there and joined the attacking left flank.
I am using my bombers to hit them there, and took the Spitfire to greet the German fighter reinforcement at the aitstrip down south.
See map

At Caen I was able to kill that trapped Panther, but the Tigers slipped back across the river.
Bought a couple of badly needed tanks and killed the Stug and recon on my side of the river.
My 8-incher blew up a 5-point arty on the other side.

Alsenor / turn 4 / Germans (defending)

I am trying to put pressure on that side to tie up enemy troops which are poised to advance south through Bocage.
My new fighter was immediately engaged by the waiting Spitfire (not visible in screenshot).
Both took damage, and after returning fire I moved the fighter westward to intercept the Tempests on the next turn.
See map

The two Fireflies were serious new arrivals and had to be dealt with in a hurry.
Fortunately I had most of my best armor close by and destroyed one of them, while crippling the other to render it harmless.

Avenger / turn 5 / Allies (attacking)

The Germans are pushing ahead north of Beaumont, and force me to bring part of my troops back to protect the home VH.
See map

Brought three of the motorized inf units and an arty up to Villers Bocage to squeeze the defenders there.
Both Tempests went to the north airstrip for rearming.
See map

I took the crippled Firefly back to hide and bought another new one.
With the combined fire of all guns I had in range it finally got rid of that nightmare of a Tiger leader!
The 8-incher dropped a shell on the garrison in South Caen, and took it down to 3 str.
The Spitfire is reloading at the airstrip as well.

Alsenor / turn 5 / Germans (defending)

The Western Kampfgruppe ostensibly has the task of presenting a threat to Bayeux, the main VH of the enemy.
Hopefully it will draw some of the Allied forces concentrated around Villers Bocage to defend the access to Bayeux, and enable the Germans to retake Bocage and pursue the infantry units advancing towards Esquay.
See map

Esquay is under strong pressure from north and now also south.
The 25-pounder also moved into dangerous range, but had no protection and took good damage from the PzIV and infantry next to it.
See map

The Garrison at Cormelle took heavy losses from the 8-incher and had to be withdrawn, as well as the mortar behind it.
With the unfortunate loss of the lead Tiger East of Caen it was time to regroup, and I withdrew all armor to the south side of the Orne River, while German artillery provided cover fire and shelled Ouistreham gun positions.
See map

Avenger / turn 6 / Allies (attacking)

The Germans are pushing hard in the West, and I have to bring some more troops back to defend my VH.
That left me with only one inf unit at Bocage, not even full strength, and I had to run to join the group advancing on Esquay.
See map

At Esquay I pushed out the inf and the PzIV, but couldn't occupy the VH yet.
See map

While the Germans are regrouping I also have a chance to reinforce my two Fireflies to full strength, and resupply all arties.
I also engaged the German fighter again which attacked the Tempests at the northern airstrip and took him down another 2 points.

Still pressing north in the Western region.

Although our infantry was able to neutralize the 25-pounder, Esquay will have to be abandoned to the enemy, due to the lack of strong enough infantry in the area.

"All quiet in the East" one could say.
I used the lull to rearm and refuel all units, and brought our heavily damaged Messerschmitt over both ADs to serve as a sacrificial lamb in case the enemy wants to finish it off. At least the AD can down the enemy fighter in return.
