Anzio Beachhead January 22, 1944
| Designer = Tony Latta British and US attempt to break the stalemate at Cassino by performing an end-run with the invasion of Anzio. Anzio is located about 45 miles south of Rome. It is hoped that the Allies can quickly establish the Beachhead and cut the roads leading to Rome thus trapping German units holding the Gustav Line and the Cassino area. Hitler decided to make an example of the Anzio invasion and scare the Allies from invading elsewhere. In fact Hitler is quoted as saying: "If we wipe them out down there, then there will be no invasion elsewhere." To make his point Hitler rushes units from all over Germany, France, and the Balkans. The Allies counter with their own reinforcements and the bloodbath is on. This scenario covers the first 24 days of the Anzio invasion. All historical units and terrain features are represented. All reinforcements are based on their actual arrival schedules as outlined in historical operations documents. The bottom-line: Germans have nothing in the beginning and steadily receive reinforcements. Allies get convoys from Naples every 3 days. Both sides are on the attack. |
