 How to...
Play without the CD
Install Custom Equipment
Install Custom Maps
Play Campaigns
Install Custom PBEM patch

Play without the CD

By following the simple modification outlined below you can play without the CD,
simply by clicking the game icon on your desktop.

To play without running the CD:

In the files of the CD you will find one called "Map".
Copy this folder and paste it into your game folder on your HD
(this is the main folder of the game, in which you will also find files like "sfx", "scenario", "userscene", etc.).

Open that newly made "Map" folder on your HD and "select" all the files in it.
(you can do this by clicking on an empty space in the folder, and pressing "ctrl-a").
Note that the extensions on the map files are .shp, and not .map!

Right click in the empty space, and click on "properties" on the bottom of the menu that appears.
Uncheck the "read only" option under "Attributes" on the bottom of the properties menu.
Close everything.

You can now take the CD out of your CD-ROM drive and store it away for back-up.
The only thing you gave up is the tunes - but your cannons can still make music on the battle fields!

In case you want to have all the action on your HD you can also copy the SOUND and SMACK folders, and uncheck the read only option like in the MAP folder.
Then go to Builders Paradise tools page, look under "Misc. Utilities", download
Panzer General II Gamefile Directory Patcher , and run it in your main PG2 folder.
(You can ignore the failure message that may come up, because it still patched your Panzer2 file!)
Now you can see the videos and hear the tunes as well, the same as if you ran the CD.

To play the game, you may find it practical to put two shortcuts on your desktop:

1. To the game:
Open your game folder, and right-click on the panzer2 icon, select send to , select desktop (create shortcut).

2. To your saved files:
Open your game folder, and right-click on the save folder, select send to , select desktop (create shortcut).

Custom equipment

Panzer General II has evolved into a game with a great variety of custom maps, scenarios, and custom equipment.
This has contributed significantly to the game's popularity in spite of newer, and technically more advanced releases.
I have selected three of the many available equipment modifications, based on their sutability for our purpose.
For strategy game players, the emphasis should probably be less on fancy icons or other window dressings, and more on substance of the units' characteristics.

The first, the Red Scorpion (RSF) files, feature very realistic icons, accompanied by excellent sound effects.
Based largely on the successful Waffenkammer files, and keeping the character of the original SSI graphics they are fully SSI compatible, which is a great advantage for suitability as club equipment.
Another great asset is a very simple installation process.

The second, the Adlerfiles by Mikael Anteskog Adler, have a lot of new icons, and different actions and sounds.
They are not SSI compatible, and do require special installations and upgrades to function properly.
A number of custom scenarios are available which are specifically designed with them.

The third, the BP files (named for Builders' Paradise) are a total change in concept.
They are not SSI compatible, and do require special installations and upgrades to function properly.
After considerable research Lasse Jensen decided on a significantly different cost/performance relationship, and as a result many of the units carry astronomical price tags.  This, he explains, is more representative of the actual availability of the equipment, and contributes to a more realistic game.

To install custom equipment files:

Step 1.
It is best to make a separate installation of PG2, under a new folder name.
I suggest you choose a name for the new folder to indicate the equipment it uses,
i.e. PG2_RSF, or PG2_Adler, or PG2_BP, etc.
Make the new folder, then install the game in it from the CD.

Step 2.
Upgrade your new installation to vs 1.02 (see here).

Step 3.
Modify your installation to play without the CD.

Step 4.
Install the equipment files.
(Select from the following equipment)

A.  The Red Scorpion (RSF) files

Download Icons&Data, and unzip into your main PG2 folder.
Download Sounds, and unzip into your SFX folder.
and update for sounds and unzip into your SFX folder.

B.  The Adler files

For this equipment to work properly, you have to install special files.

Go to Adlerkorps site for download and instructions.

C.  The Builder's Paradise files
For this equipment to work properly, you have to install special files.
Go to BuildersParadise site for download and instructions.

Custom maps

There are a great number of very good custom designed maps available, and that number is still growing.
Many of them make use of the maximum possible area the game allows for, and offer new, interesting possibilities for scenario design.
If you want to play a custom scenario which has been designed on a custom map, you need to install the map files first.

Installation:

I have attempted to document the necessary steps in great detail, and it should be easy for everyone to follow these instructions.

To install custom maps:

Step 1.
Upgrade your new installation to vs 1.02 (see here).

Step 2.
Modify your installation to play without the CD.

The files for the maps consist of two parts, the .shp files and the .map files.
Do not get confused by the fact that the files in the Map folder are called .shp files,
and the files with the .map extensions actually belong in the scenario folder.

Step 3.
You can download the .map files from Builder's Paradise, and unzip them into your scenario folder.

Step 4.
You can select the custom map you want from Builder's Paradise.
Download and unzip it into the Map folder.

You can now play any custom scenario that requires one of these maps.
All you need to do is download the scenario and unzip it into the userscene folder.
It will show up with blue text in your scenario window.

Campaigns

Campaign play is the ultimate PG2 experience, and you can play them against intelligent opponents with all the features you have come to love in the original SSI campaigns against the computer, without the shortcomings of the Artificial Intelligence.

To adjust to the replacement of the AI with real thinking opponents the scenarios have to be customized. The resulting campaigns should enable play to be competitive and make it interesting for both, attacker and defender.
On the other hand it is undesirable to have to start a campaign all over after losing one scenario, therefore the modifications allow you to go back to the same scenario you just lost and try your luck again.

We will have the modified SSI campaigns available for downloading as they get ready.
Four are ready for you to try:  Onward to Berlin, Defending the Reich, and both Crusades in the West  British and American
We also have a short 3-scenario practice campaign of the Afrika Korps (by Diego Esteban) available to make you familiar with procedures.
Simply unzip into your <scenario> folder.

You also need a tool to convert each scenario as you play the campaign into a format which can be played by email.  You can download it here:  PBEM_CMP Converter Tool.

If you wish to make reports of your progress you can do so at our Campaign Report Forum.
To make your reports real easy you can download the Campaign Report tool from our site.

*** Instructions for use are below! ***

How to use the PBEM_CMP Converter tool:

Step 1.
Start campaign / save it immediately with name of scenario and opponent.
(the opponent must be the current "local commander" of the scenario)
This produces an .xls file in your save folder.

Step 2.
Run PBEM_CMP converter tool.
(The two prestige windows can be used to change settings for attacker and defender.
No changes should be made for the custom campaigns downloaded from our site.)
Next, select "Campaign->PBEM"
Select the .xls file, give it a specific name other than the .xls file.
This will produce a .cmp file and an .eml file.
Be sure to save the .cmp file, because you will need it for conversion to next scenario!

Step 3.
You can now play the .eml file like any other PBEM turn.
Save it by giving it the ususal PBEM file name for the turn, zip it up and mail it to the opponent.
The opponent can continue as with any PBEM turn.

Step 4.
Before taking the last VH you need to save the game as you normally do in PBEM, then run the tool again, selecting "PBEM->campaign".
Select the .eml file when prompted, then the .cmp file you saved in step 2.
This will produce an .xls file again, ready to be loaded as a campaign turn.
You can now take the last VH, and start the next scenario with your upgrades, overstrenghts, etc. and save it immediately again under name of the new scenario and opponent.

How to use the CMP_Report tool:

You can run the report tool any time you have saved a scenario in campaign mode (as .xls file).
An "end of scenario" report can be made before you take the last VH, or a "start of scenario" before you convert your new scenario to .eml.

Step 1.
Load CMP_Report tool.

Step 2.
Enable all checkbox options on the top line.

Step 3.
Click on "Load Saved Game" and find the saved campaign file in your "save" folder.

Step 4.
Highlight and copy all text.

Step 5.
Go to the Campaign Reports Forum and paste the text into your post.
(Remember that html has to be unchecked!)
