PBEM (Play By E-Mail)

- for many players the perfect way to enjoy this game.

Playing against the computer will never challenge your strategy skills
the way a human opponent can,
and "live", or "on-line" play takes a long time in one sitting,
because you have to go through a whole game.

PBEM allows you the flexibility of doing your turn
WHEN YOU HAVE THE TIME FOR IT.

There are a few technical aspect to PBEM
that will make things go smoothly.

1. You need to upgrade your game

2. You need to have a file compressor (like WinZip) to mail your turns.

Note: We have accepted Graeme Carter's H-patch ("007") as our official club upgrade patch for competition.
It eliminates several bugs which the 1.02 SSI patch did not correct.  See here: Club Custom upgrades

The first thing you should do after you open your turn
is to hit the "replay button" to review your opponent's actions
!

This is one of the most valuable tools in PBEM play.
It not only shows you what the enemy did, and how the current positions developed, but also gives you brief views of enemy units which will be invisible on your turn.  It can also alert you to any illegal action of your opponent.

When you have done your worst, save the game, zip it up and attach it to the mail you send.
When you save the game, it will ask you for a name to save it under.
To make it easier for all players it is advisable to label the turns consistently.
One successful method is this: Scenario_player_side/turn.

Examples:

Kanev_Joel_Rus01
Kanev_Al_Ger01
Malta_Paul_Eng03
Prok_Mats_Ger05

You should also enter the setting you used into the chat box, along with the opponent's name.

It may look something like this: Setting is 200:300 / Good luck, PantherX!

It is also advisable to make a new folder with your opponent’s name,
and keep all sent turns in there.  In case one gets lost in the mail you can easily resend it.

Victory condition can not be saved!

What that this means is that when victory conditions are achieved by either player, the game shows the victory message and shuts down, without giving you a chance to save it for mailing.
The way we handle that problem is by not entering the last VH, or alternatively, not destroying the last enemy unit.  It can usually be seen quite easily that victory was possible in that turn, and you can also take a screenshot and mail it along to show accessibility of the last VH.

Screenshots:

At any time in a game you can take a picture of the scene you see by pressing the F11 key.

A "screenshot" will be saved in the PG2 folder as a bitmap file under the name of screen0, or screen1, or screen2, depending on how many you make.
If you would like to annotate the screenshot you can do so with your bitmap application program.

These screenshots can be used for many purposes.  One of them is of course, to show evidence of existing victory conditions.
Another one is to add a little fun to the game by sending the screenshot, with appropriate commentary, to your opponent during a battle.  You can send it by simply "inserting" the file into your email window (set for html, or "enriched text").
However, you may want to reduce the KB size of your message by zipping the file up and sending it as an attachment.
